What is Assets Under Management for an Institutional Investor?

Assets under management is for a manager, not for an investor. An investor has just plain assets. AUM is exactly what it says, the amount of money a manager has control over. It can be in commingled funds or separate accounts. The assets belong to the investor and are typically held at a custodian, but the manager directs how they are invested.
