How do you negotiate for a senior manager title when switching roles?
Usually, when switching roles (job??) within the same company the new job carries an established title. If this is a new position created then, perhaps, there is some negotiation as to what the title is to be. Attempting to make this too elevated a title can be problematic. You could anger management or co-workers. Example: Suppose you were in the accounting department and management decided they wanted a person to closely follow and follow-up the accounts receivable of the company. In other organizations this might be simply classified as receivables clerk. Trying to rename this to, say, Senior Accounts Receivable Manager might be a stretch and could trigger backlash. Better to settle for Accounts Receivable Manager. And, on assumption of the job establish what the historical receivables rollover time has been and then track your own performance in speeding up collection by sending statements and to grossly over due receivable accounts, 120 days and out, a reminder of the company payment terms. Be careful not to make anyone angry that they take the matter up with your sales department that will cause you problems. If you are successful in reducing the rollover time in, say, in six months, write a note to your immediate supervisor with the track record, being careful to state only the facts. One problem of reducing rollover time of receivable is slippage due to lack of diligent follow through, so be mindful of this pitfall. I used receivable clerk as the example but it could be applied to many functions in a corporation. Titles are nice but pay and benefits are the real rewards.
