What do you think about the concepts of coppicing?
I had to look up the definition of the word. The concept is no different then the way we commercially farm animals. It looks like the tree only gets to experience life as a tree for a few years, cut down, and tries again. While I have not maintained a woodland, I think that the cutting down of the dead, and nearly dead, trees, and making sure there is a new tree (indigenous to that area) there to replace it, is the best way to keep a woodland healthy. I am a gardener and know that plants grow more vigorously, and have a better root system, when pruned regularly. So the pruning of the dead stuff, and insect infested branches, off of healthy trees, and pruning back struggling trees, would be useful as well.
