Can we settle the debate on learning management systems?
Can we settle the debate on learning management systems? Do you like Canvas or Blackboard? The top three LMS offerings for education are Blackboard Learn, Canvas, and Moodle, and Ive used them all quite a lot. On my view, if you are using one of these three, you are probably fine, so migrating to a new LMS is probably not worth the hassle. But of these three, Canvas is the most modern and has a superior user interface and experience, both for faculty and students. So if you starting from scratch or have a less-common LMS now, then it probably makes sense to migrate to Canvas. Let me also point out that both Canvas and Moodle have excellent user communities, and it is easy to find answers to questions online. Blackboard Learn not so much. Finally, let me note that if you are considering a less-common LMS, then you wont find experienced faculty, instructional designers, educational technologists, administrators, or a user community. These elements are all part of the larger system, and as important as the underlying software.
