How common or uncommon is it for a music manager who has no A- list?
People have to start somewhere. Its very common for a new manager to land an artist who is D list or below with a major label. In fact labels are looking for unknowns because they dont want to pay them A B or C list money. This question is so common that its listed in every business of music book and the answer is always to give a new manager that is hungry a shot. Do you think that manager with an A-list client is going to give you any time of day? What have you accomplished? These are the questions that manager is going to ask you. Find a manager that you connect with and is going to work their butt off for you. Unless youre an A list celeb dont worry about looking for an A-list manager. They wont even put you on a list.
